About VWI

Learn about the platform

To make a step change in the knowledge and technology base for the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the Portuguese vine and wine system.   New knowledge will underpin the sector’s capacity to

  • Increase the demand for Portuguese wines;
  • Increase the sales value of Portuguese wines;
  • Assure that the system and associated territories producing and commercializing wine, is efficient, resilient and flexible in order to respond to climate driven, demographic and economic challenges.

The Platform will integrate the wine-related research that is performed in many different disciplines and with many different specific objectives under one global strategy, defined by the wine sector.  In parallel it will accelerate the process of making the research performed more relevant to the Portuguese wine sector and to make it available to and useable by the sector.  In the first stage this will be achieved in the context of UTAD and its close partners, but it is intended that the scope and range will evolve to a national level.  Research and all associated activities will be centred on the twin objectives of competitiveness of Portuguese wines and the sustainability of the Portuguese wine system.

The Project

The Platform of Innovation of the Vine and Wine is a multidisciplinary project which mobilizes more than 110 Researchers -70 with PhDs – with experience in many areas, ranging from soil science, climatology, ecology, viticulture, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, oenology and engineering to economics and management.  The project is structured in four integrative and complementary research areas:

Edafoclimatic conditions – Study of the interactions between edaphoclimatic conditions and vines at the vineyard scale.

Viticulture – Implementation of adaptation strategies to climate change for the Portuguese wine regions of the North, with particular emphasis on the Douro regions. Various agronomic and viticultural methods will be tested, including precision viticulture tools.

Winemaking – Develop and optimize oenological practices that promote the sustainable production of wines of highly differentiated quality, oriented to the market of denomination of origin of the northern region.

Competitiveness – With a transversal scope to the other Lines of Research, it examines the competitiveness of the wine sector through research on vineyard systems, markets and consumers, international trade, and territorial-based activities associated with vineyards and wine, such as Oenotourism or Gastronomy.

The Platform & the Centre of Excellence of Vine & Wine

The Platform has activities distributed in laboratories, experimental plots and vineyards across the Northern Region of Portugal and beyond. It also has a dedicated material processing and laboratory hub with of 1,200 m2 of fully equipped laboratory space. This Centre of Excellence for Vine and Wine is located in Régia-Douro Park – Science and Technology Park of Vila Real and within the Demarcated Region of the Douro. Jointly promoted and owned by the Vila Real City Council, the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro and by Portuspark – Network of Technology Parks and Incubators. It consists of a Business Incubator, a Business Center (Douro Business Center), a Technological Pole of Excellence and Industrial Lots. This park is located with excellent motorway access, 45 minutes from Porto, 35 minutes from Viseu and 1 hour from the border with Spain.
